Racial equity is the result achieved when you can’t predict advantage and disadvantage by race.
According to US News…
96% of the student body population is a Person of Color. However, Black students only make up 2% of that population. The WHS Black Alumni Association strives to not only support Black students, through our partner organization, Young Black Scholars, but wants to create a strong community in hopes of one day increasing the attrition numbers and representation of Black students at Whitney High School.
The Talented 2%
The Talented Tenth is a term that designated a leadership class of African Americans in the early 20th century. The term was created by Northern philanthropists, then publicized by W. E. B. Du Bois in an influential essay of the same name, which he published in September 1903. Building on W.E.B. Du Bois’ sentiment, while only a small part of the population, we pride ourselves on being the Talented 2%.
